The reigning king of mobile maps. Works great with GPS Hack.

Google Maps

Note: Google Maps uses data!!! The actual map images are downloaded from Google’s servers just like image on the web. Be careful if you do not have an unlimited data usage plan because Google Maps may increase your phone bill.

i dont have a data plan, does google maps require data usage and therefor run up my bill?

  2. david Says:

    h0pper,
Google Maps requires data usage and will run up your bill if you don’t have a data plan. Google Maps downloads the map images from Google’s servers so data usage occurs.

  3. h0pper Says:

ok thank you. great site by the way, thanks!

  4. dgh Says:

    Thanks David … works nicely

    +1

  5. frokey Says:

I don’t have a data plan either, but I was wondering…Is there a mapping program out there that I can download the maps using my computer’s internet connection and then just transfer them to my phone?

  6. david Says:

    frokey,

Not for free — you can buy Garmin TX though which wont use your data plan.

  7. MosesFleetwoodWalker Says:

So is this program that much better than Live Search??…. I’ve only used Live Search and Yahoo! 3.0 directions…… what do you guys think……. This site is the bomb digity…… I don’t even think there is an iPhone enthusiast out there with a site as cool and well put together as this one….. great job David…….

  8. david Says:

    Moses,

I think Google Maps is more or less he same as Live Search of Yahoo! 3.0 Directions — its just a matter of preference. I tend to use Google products so I lean towards Google Maps, though i’ve never had problems using Live Search for directions, etc.

    And thanks for the compliment!!

  9. CPLWeeks Says:

My wife managed to get herself into a minor car accident in Queens the night before last. I had to go get her to the tune of 400 miles, 6 hours, and no sleep. AT&T’s TeleNav software screwed the pooch, but Google Maps worked flawlessly. This saved my butt. Thanks!

  10. pukka Says:

If you dont have an unlimited data plan, as I, then do not use google maps. Install Garmin Mobile xt, I have whipped up a Install guide over in the forums listed below

  11. murdoc Says:

    Dave, random BJII question:

I get an error msg when I try to get online:

“The current connection cannot be used for your current request. Please end the current connection and try again.”

I just bought my phone and haven’t gotten online yet. Any quick fixes? I guess I’ll start diggin through the manual.

  12. david Says:

    murdoc,
Not sure — can you get on the internet at all? If not i’d give AT&T a ring and have them fix it for you! If its a new phone give them a call, it shouldnt be doing that out of the box (unless you were mucking around with settings, in which case try doing a hard-reset, theres a post how to do that in the tips & tricks section)

  13. murdoc Says:

David, yea it was an ISP problem. Taken care of.

  14. alien_express Says:

I have an unlimited data plan but it always says that my current location is unavailable?

I installed google maps then installed then hack maybe uninstall google maps then reinstall?

Do i have to pay for telenav?

    The app unlock worked fine.

  15. david Says:

    alien express,
you must pay to use telenav. have you configured your Google Maps to use COM 4?

  16. alien_express Says:

    no i dont

    how do i do that?
maybe its not workking because i got it grom the google site and not here?

  17. tedya Says:

    david,
How do you configure Google maps to use Com4? The only gps settings I see is “use windows” or “set manually”. Thanks.

  18. david Says:

    tedya,
Go to “Google Maps > Menu > Options > GPS Settings > Set Manually > First Dropdown: COM 4, Second Dropdown: 19200″

  19. alien_express Says:

ok tried that it says initializing for about 4 minutes then says reciever can not be found says to make sure i have a gps on my phone…..

  20. alien_express Says:

ok it worked after i downloaded windows live and used that with com 4 set up then tried google again. idk why that worked but it did.

  21. camphenry Says:

does google maps give voice turn by turn directions like telenav?

  22. david Says:

    camphenry,
No – Google Maps does not have any voice instructions.

  23. benyod Says:

Can unlocking the GPS allow the BJII to be a simple GPS receiver? I have TomTom Navigator 5 on a Treo 650, would like to use BJII’s GPS signal and bluetooth pair the two devices. BJII provides the GPS receiver and Treo provides mapping.

I can pair the two devices, but the software doesn’t recognize BJII as a GPS receiver. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Google Maps does work on the phone, but I would prefer to use the nav software on the treo.

  24. david Says:

    benyod,

Try posting your question in the forums, you will probably get a better response. Unfortunately I dont have any experience with pairing two phones so I’m of no help on this one :(

  25. dasilva100 Says:

Hello, What happen if I run google maps and then I go to home pressing the home button… It’s google maps still running and requesting data from internet?
I have a 2MB plan (garbage) but I received mi last bill and I used more than this only in one day!. I remember that that day I used google maps but not so much. Is that possible?

    Thanks

  26. david Says:

    dasilva,

Good question – im not sure, but i dont think this would be a problem unless your using GPS with GoogleMaps (and moving around alot) .. using GPS would force GoogleMaps to download new map images as you moved. If you werent using GPS then GoogleMaps shouldnt be the culprit while it was running in the background (because its not grabbing any new data, it only grabs new data when you move the map around) ..

Depending for how long you were using Google Maps its very possible you exceeded 2 mb .. in the age of broadband 2mb will add up pretty quickly. Try using the MoDaCo No Data application (under Utilities) to prevent unwanted data usage.

  27. kixfan Says:

I unlocked my phone, verified that it is unlocked, changed the google map settings as stated to com4 and 19200. It says initializing and then says gps not found. Make sure I have a gps on my phone. What am I doing wrong?

  28. IEatGlue Says:

Okay so, to install this you run the app-unlocker, download the google map thing and then it should work?

and it will be TOTALLY free as long as you have unlimited data? you don’t get charged for like using your GPS or anything extra?

  29. david Says:

Ieatglue, Correct – if you have unlimited data you will not incur any extra cost by using the GPS with GoogleMaps.

  30. IEatGlue Says:

    Awesome :D

    thanks for clearing that up

  31. IEatGlue Says:

oh also, can anyone post a link to download the google map CAB?

it wants my phone number but i can’t pay for them to text me the link to my phone :(

  32. skolastix Says:

I have the exact same problem as kixfan above. I have also ran all of teh application unlockers and they worked well for all of my other programs. when I run Google maps and change the google map settings as stated to com4 and 19200settings as per above, I also get the GPS not found issue.

  33. eric Says:

Hi guys! Nice place to have fresh news about BJ2 and it softwares. I’ve made a video about some aspects of Google Maps running in WM6.1 Brazilian portuguese.

    Check it out in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yPRBlLGpTc

    Sy!

  34. devon.patterson Says:

I installed the 6.1 version for my blackjack2 and google maps works great, gps works and everything but it drains the battery VERY FAST when the gps is connected…..is there anyway to fix this?

  35. david Says:

devon, not that i know of – the GPS hardware just uses alot of energy. :T

  36. devon.patterson Says:

ok…thanks anyway…..other than the battery draining quickly….i love it….its perfect…..i have upgraded to 6.1 and have this application, but im looking for more things to add to my phone….any ideas/useful software…..i didn’t find very many on here that useful, besides what i have already

  37. littlegoldwoman Says:

We have a 30$ a month unlimited data plan. We just got back from a trip (Ft. Leavenworth to St. Louis to Chicago to Des Moines back to Ft. Leavenworth in four days) and Google maps was AMAZING. I love it. It makes it sooooo easy to travel now and I dont have to try and see tiny map print in the dark. Fantastic. I highly recommend this to anyone who is older that travels for business or recreation.

  38. Assetts Says:

At the moment im speaking for myself, but i got google maps GPS working without the app unlock. I didnt even have to mess with any settings. In options, i dont have it set to COM4, instead i just have it set as “Managed by Windows.” For anyone who does this and says that it takes forever for their gps to find satelites, i had the same problem but i stood outside for like 5 min and it found a max of like 5 satelites and everytime i connect after that, it takes about 10 seconds give or take.

  39. roujinz Says:

Guys check out this program: Terracrosser (www.terracrosser.com)
It allows you to download maps from Yahoo or Google Maps on to your PC and them upload them to your BJII.
And it works with the BJII’s GPS so you can have navigation using your choice of maps with out the need to have a data plan since it works offline.

The developer is working on getting it to work specifically on a BJII. As it is right now it does work but has a couple of technical issues that is being sorted out. Either way it is a great program to use for navigation especially if you dont have a data plan, like me! :) I’ve been using it for a couple of months now.

Hopefully it could be listed here as a BJII compatiable GPS program.

PS – I love this site! It helped me tweak my BJII to just the way I like it! Thanks for the great work!!

  40. david Says:

Whoa – Just checked out http://www.terracrosser.com … It looks like a brilliant little application. If it works as well as I think it will, I’ll work on a write-up about it over the next couple days. Thanks for the great find roujinz!

  41. roujinz Says:

    david (and everyone else)

Terracrosser version 2.1.1 is out and so far works perfectly with the Blackjack II (i617).
Please visit the following link for more information:
    http://www.terracrosser.com

The online manual has not been updated to reflect the button usage for the i617, so please visit the following link for information:
    http://terracrosser.com/forum/index.php?topic=165.0

BTW – in no way do I profit or gain compensation from Terracrosser, I just help the developer manage the forums so that he has more time to fine tune this wonderful application. I also believe that BJII users really need to know about it since it is a great app to have on your phone and it is why I needed to post here and let others know.

    Regards,
    RoujinZ

  42. thanos Says:

Does Google Maps use data usage or internet browsing. I have unlimited internet browsing but not a data plan. Another question is the GPS app locked on the BJII? Or is this simply a way to get around paying for the data usage?

    thanks

  43. david Says:

thanos, please read the post and comments. this issue has been addressed multiple times.

  44. trevorr77 Says:

What exactly does using COM4 do? I was able to connect without it, but if I switch will it work better?

  45. jbusby825 Says:

    david,
i just recently bought a BJII and i am loving it. i have absolutely enjoyed your site, thanks for all the work you are doing on it.

i have installed the GPS hack as well as google maps. i have set the settings on google maps to COM4 and 19200 as you mentioned earlier in the posts. when i click on “Use GPS” it says “Initializing…” and it sits there for about 2 minutes and then gives me the error that the GPS is not found. any ideas on why this is happening??? thank you again for having this site.

  46. david Says:

    jbusby,
Im not sure, i’ve seen this reported several times and ever experienced it myself (I reformatted to fix)

Is your phone WM6.1 – If not, update to WM6.1 and try using GPS without MoDaCo. If it is, I’d try re-formatting you blackjack II to factory defaults and try using the GPS without the MoDaCo GPS Hack.

  47. froyd Says:

I agree with Assetts… I was able to get GPS functionality in Google Maps by letting Windows manage the GPS and not running through COM4… YMMV

    PS- I’m running 6.1

  48. Serpentinya Says:

Is there a google maps for WM6.0? I can’t find one. It’s seems like a pain to install 6.1

  49. david Says:

Serpentinya, I believe Google Maps will work on Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 6.1

  50. Raiderboi22 Says:

dear david i tried to install the MoDaCa gps hack but i still can’t get google maps to run it say i need an unlimted data plan which i have do you know what i could be doing wrong?

  51. david Says:

raiderboi – correct – you should have unlimited data to use Google Maps. GPS has nothing to do with data usage. Se the note in the post about it.

  52. mvanwey Says:

First, this site is great, I want to thank everyone for their posts. You guys got me through the WM 6.1 upgrade w/ no problems.
I had been unsuccessful w/ re-installing Google maps, which was working perfect on 6.0. since the day I bought it.
Tried MoDaCo GPS hack – did not work,
Tried COM 4 and 19200 Baud – did not work,
Removed MoDaCo and Google, Re-installed Google – did not work,
Thanks “alien_express”. Installed Window Live – worked first time, now Google maps works too.
BTW, Windows Live Search can’t find actual street addresses like Google, but I don’t care, I have my Google back!
    Thanks!

  53. MarkInAtlanta Says:

I just ran the install and it works flawlessly without changing anything. Even the GPs worked perfectly without making any changes. But I did the Windows updates to 6.1 myself, and I have the device previously unlocked so I can use it the Internet Sharing with my laptop (both the cable and bluetooth work flawlessly for this). But yeah, you DEFINITELY have to have an unlimited data plan for this app, it uses almost 2MB just downloading it, not to mention loading the maps.

  54. mattwayne Says:

here is a gpsed that works on bjII’s, i have it on my phone and it works pretty good and can be operated offline direct link download http://www.gpsed.com/go?http://wap.gpsed.com/wm/gpsed.mssp.cab

  55. gnarki11er Says:

i installed google maps and it was installed successfully. but there is one problem. it does center to my exact location. its maybe about a 1/4 mile off of my standing location. is there anything to fix this. live search does not give me any problems. why is this happening?

  56. david Says:

gnarkiller – it sounds like your GPS isnt working – rather googlemaps is using your wireless signal to estimate your location. Does googlemaps report the number of active GPS satellites when this problem occurs?

  57. gnarki11er Says:

no, it does not report the number of active gps satellites.

  58. jact_12 Says:

    dave,

Is there an option with google maps or download out there that would measure speed via GPS?

  59. bkleynbok Says:

Got BJII replacement from AT&T, looks like they already upgraded to WM6.1.
Installed latest Google Maps as well as Bing.
Google maps can’t find satellites. Bing can’t find satellites.

Tried using MoDaCo GPS hack without much success with COM4 port configured or without.

Can someone tell me what can I do?

    Thanks!

  60. Mikey_likes_it Says:

First of all this website rocks. Just got a BJII second hand and in a couple days I’ve got it all up to date and doing cool things. I was having the same issue some others had with this app. This worked for me and a couple other people I think. I might have an extra step or two but this is exactly what I did. I have no idea why this works.

For those of you having trouble getting Google Maps to use GPS:

Make sure you’ve upgraded to WM 6.1.

Make sure the GPS settings in Google Maps are set to “Managed by Windows”

Install Bing mobile (formerly known as Windows Live Search).

Go outside. You don’t really have to but you will find satellites faster if you are outside.

Run Bing mobile and go to the maps feature and then Menu > Track me using GPS

Wait a couple minutes for it to find satellites.

Exit Bing and never use it again if you don’t want to.

Run Google Maps and then Menu > Use GPS. It should pick up satellites rather quickly.

    Hope this helps!
