hey everyone, looks like the garmin xt gps scene is getting quite popular around here so i'm wondering how you guys are using it while driving. i'm looking for a mount that's not too bulky looking (preferably suction cup for windshield) like this one:

or i might just build one if i can't find a sleek looking one

been there done that.
all i've found were chunky universal mounts. i was hoping to find a solution to windshield mounts that at least caters to smartphone shaped devices at least. something more subtle that doesn't look like it can hold 2 pocket pc's simultaniously
i'll probably end up making my own

Could a clip-on type holster be retrofitted onto a suction arm of some type? That would be convenient.

BrentH, now we're getting somewhere! funny enough that after my last post i thought of the same thing
i also found a pretty subtle suction cup mount… not like that hideously long goose neck one. so i'll mount the holster onto there

Zammykoo, where did you find that mount? It looks promissing.
I've found that my cars speedo cluster is the perfect size to wedge my phone into so i can easily see my gps while driving. It doesn't block anything important and I've gotten pretty good at getting it stuck so it won't fall out over bumps and won't press it's own power button. This works ok enough, but I'd like something a little more official.
I had looked at Ram Mounts. They make two versions, one universal magnetic mount and another system that includes a mount specfic for your car and another specific for your phone. Now that I look again, they must have come down in price, because that was the only reason I didn't bite. http://www.ram-mount.com/cell_….._phone.htm

i didn't spend too much on the two parts either, i think they were total $7 shipped from ebay. if anyone is wondering what kind of suction/arm it is… it's a sirius satellite mount HERE it also comes with a vent mount too so that's a bonus

Any luck, zammy?
yes i've received my parts in the mail but unfortunately the cheapo holster i got on ebay doesn't fit the phone…. i'm going to have to do some modding to make it fit.
the sirius window mount i posted above is superb though, it feels durable and is quite minimal
i'll post pics once i get the hackjob done

I've been using a vent mount for my phone. It's been decent but I'd sooner have something mouted on the windshield (better visibility). I like the idea of the RAM mount but I don't see it being strong enough.. Perhaps it really is. I'll tell you this though, that video of buddy taking the phone on and off from the website gets annoying. Funny how they have a rewind button for 2 second video that loops forever..
So yeah, Zammykoo, I'm quite curious to see what you end up McGyvering..

dave, well i've havent really had the chance to get ahold of another holster that fits because i've recently upgraded to an iphone… so i won't be messing around with the bj2 any longer.
but i'm still going to use the windshield mount for the iphone though, i'm planning on using some sheet metal to form a clasp and wrap it in some kinda fabric. i have some faux leather so i'm probably going to use that. then mount the clasp onto the arm. i know there are already existing iphone holsters but i have a silicon case on it already so it's too thick to fit
i'll post some pics as soon as i can get some of it done… i would encourage you guys to make something similar because they will essentially serve the same purpose

zammy,
Very nice! You're innovative that's for sure. I like this approach and I can see myself making two of them. One for the car and the other as a cradle for the phone on my desk.
Question about the sheet metal. To cut it, and you did a great job btw, did you use tin snips? I noticed your edges are really nice and straight.
Great work!
Cheers, Dave

thanks for the compliments guys, and yes i used tin snips to cut the shape out of the sheet metal, though the edges will be sharp so be cautious. but if you're wrapping it with fabric or leather i dont think its necessary to sand the edges down, at least i didn't and it didnt give me any problems.
my leather wrap is a bit sloppy so i'll probably end up rewrapping it.
but anyway i took pics of the mounted arm on my windshield so i'll post them up tonight. cheers

so here are the pics i took earlier today, i'm glad with the overall results of the custom made mount and that i didn't settle for the bulky universal ones sold everywhere. I just need to clean up the leather wrap and it'll be perfect!
