I appreciate all the time spent helping people on these forums, but to come to a forum that has 18 pages of issues and problems for what should be a simple software installation or upgrade is yet another in a long line of failures in the IT field that ultimately steals more time from people's lives. The entire computer industry has fed us mostly hogwash when it comes to their promise of making our lives easier. They sell us new and improved versions of software and OS's and what do they get us? A different look maybe, new features…maybe, but not without many hours of frustrations for many as noted in this ONE topic on ONE forum.
I began my day when I discovered that Garmin had an upgrade for XT. My current version of XT has been running OK mostly on my BJII, but I too, got sucked into the "new and improved version". So I downloaded it from Garmin's website, installed it and BAM now it won't run. Like many here I receive the screen asking for one of several optionsto either use the free trial, purchase it, etc. I contact Garmin's tech support and get a live person in less than a minute (very rare these days), and they inform me that version 5 is not compatible with the BJII just yet and told me to reinstall version 4.XXX.
But no, I decide to Google the topic and find this forum. Although I was scared off at first by the large number of posts, I began the process of following the instructions, downloading files, torrents, etc and reading almost all the posts here. Well here it is after 10:00 pm, and it is still not working. I spent most of my day at work (I'm self employed, so working on IT stuff earns me zero dollars) screwing with this issue and lost a day to earn income. I would have been ahead of the game financially if I went out and bought one of the higher priced Garmin GPS units. So tomorrow morning I will reinstall version 4 and chalk up a lost day as yet another testimony to the dismal record of the consumer technology field.
To all of you that had little or no problems, I'm envious. To the many that spent many hours fighting this issue, I feel your pain, but I am throwing in the white flag. I quit. It's just not worth it. As I have said before on many similar issues…If it ain't broke don't fix it…If it doesn't work break it. Excuse me while I go grab my hammer

wow am i running into trouble.. have the same issues as other people with the bluetooth on the top left corner.. lets try to solve this since pukka keeps telling people to re do all the steps. frankly, theres no point. what needs to be added to the guide is the gpsid link and modaco activator.
wm 6.1, and bluetooth top left seems to be a few ways.
1) update garmin software- no workie, installs a trial overtop
2) run gpsid and change to com4- gonna try
3) run modaco activator- gonna try.
ill let you know which one works
Im sorry to hear that you havent had any luck with Garmin, Now to state that the Guide is missing links, if you followed this online guide ive put up, you would have realized I actually do Have the Modaco GPS activater linked…..its actually one of the very first steps, Now as for GPSID, thats a useless tool and shouldnt even be thrown into this, Ive got this hack to work flawless with 3 bj2's(i617 and i616), 1 Motorola q9h and a Nokia n95(had some issues but got it working)
Now to fix your problem its fairly simple (ive figured it out to the t), just install the Modaco GPS activator, restart phone, start up Garmin, switch to intermidiate drivers….
If you have any more problems please PM me.

Thanks Pukka… I got it working. the guide could use a bit of cleaning up, and maybe two different guides for 6.0 and 6.1.
While I realize that the GPS activator is linked at the top, you mention you do not need this for 6.1, while in fact, you do.
You mentioned for people getting the bluetooth logo to reinstall garmin, because of an error in steps or in copying from the keygen. I did it twice, and it still did not work. I used the GPS activator and bam it works.
This is clearly the solution to the bluetooth problem.
What I'm asking is if you can please edit the guide, and take out the "you do not need this for 6.1″.. because you do. Please mention in the guide for 6.1 users to in fact install the gps activator. Thanks

Yes well when 6.1 did come out many people stated the GPS activator was not needed for Garmin to work, as I have the i616 (Canadian version of 6.1) there was no 6.1 update for me until about a month ago…. I will change the guide to reflect these problems thanks for the input….I only found out about a month ago as well that many people who had the bluetooth screen hadn't have installed the Modaco GPS hack that's why I stated to tell them to restart the guide….Many people were probably embarrassed that they hadn't installed the Modaco GPS activator that they said it just started to work after restarting the procedure..

if it took you 3-4 weeks I suggest updating later, just play around with this version and get used to it, then see if you want to upgrade, the upgraded version just looks more bubbly and has the option to show a pictures of a car/truck( or anything ) at your location…..Maps look the same however.

It probably is buried somewhere in this post, but how much memory is required to have the entire US on the memory card.

Mine is working now! Thanks for the help everyone!
dsdirt,
You first said you got a screen that listed 4 options. Now you say you got it to work. What exactly did you do? I have the same problem.
(Edit) Well I went back and uninstalled ver 5. and reinstalled ver 4. Then I reinstalled version 5 over it. And it worked. Don't know why. but it did! Oh joy!!

I really appreciate what you have done. I think I finally got it to work. I have a question though: I installed about 5 maps via MapInstall. I wanted to do more, but it said I didn't have enough room on drive c: even though mapinstall and garmin folders on my computer are on drive e: (my largest drive). I thought I could just add more maps later. Everything looked fine. I added more maps last night. When I came back this morning, my local detail maps were not on my phone. Does mapinstall overwrite previous maps that were loaded? And is there any way I can get it to use e: instead of checking how much space is on c:? Thanks for any help you can give.
One more thing: where on the storage cards are the maps saved and can I see which maps are installed and which aren't?

Had the original installed and working, then successfully installed the update. However, I cannot get it working. I did see someone else in an earlier post that had the same problem I am having where when you start it up, you get a selection as follows:
Purchase & Go!
Begin Free Trial
Enter Product Key
Connect to a Garmin GPS
I saw Pukka's reply to try the "connect to a Garmin GPS" and that does not do anything (just says Scanning bluetooth or Scanning attached and never does anything). I can skip that and go to the main page, but it says it will only allow me to connect to an attached GPS. I have the GPS hack installed and have redone the key generation steps without any change. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I found when I updated that my unit ID changed. Once I retrieved my new ID number and regenerated new keys it worked fine.

Download the Modaco GPS hack
Yeah, I made sure to do that as part of the initial download. Already have that installed. Are you saying to redownload/reinstall the hack?

OK…a little help. Go to the Mapsource point, and when I run it, it shows that it is there, but gives a Unit ID of 0. I see that everyone is saying you can go to settings, about…but I can't seem to do this.
Do you run Garmin XT and then go about? How do I select settings? I am on 6.0 does that matter?

Ok, open Garmin Mobile xt on your phone, skip all the setting about bluetooth and connecting, now once your on the main screen go to settings—->>about, now you should see your unit id.

There is no setting icon on the main screen. When I look at a manual it looks like there should be.

FYI – I redid the key generation steps another time and it worked fine. I must have mistyped my card id or copied the wrong text file to my storage card. If any of you ran into this as well, once it starts working, you still have to go where the bars should be, click on it, disable to get to the options to select. The only one that worked for me is the intermediate driver. Works fine now. I do like the look and feel of the upgrade a lot better. Thanks everyone!
