Use your Blackjack II as a Wireless Modem
Reamer has put together a hack that lets you use your Blackjack II as a Wireless modem for your laptop or computer! If you have a (I suggest unlimited) data plan, you can now use your Blackjack II’s 3G data connection to allow your laptop or desktop PC to connect to the internet. This hack works with Windows computers and might work on OS X machines via Bluetooth (OS X support hasn’t been tested).
Follow these steps to enable wireless tethering on your Blackjack II
- Install the CAB file
- Go to Settings > Connections > GPRS
- In the AT&T ISP and MEdia Net options
- Access Point: wap.cingular
- Use Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
- Password: CINGULAR1
- Start Menu > Programs > Internet Sharing
If you have a problem with the message saying “remote party has ended the connection” just reboot your Blackjack II.
Big, big thanks to Reamer for putting this hack together!
FYI – tethering without an expensive tethering plan from AT&T is technically against their terms of use (read the section Prohibited and Permissible Uses). AT&T will probably not notice unless you move a TON of data through yout AT&T “unlimited” data plan account (ex. bittorrenting using your Blackjack II). Reportedly you get 5GB of bandwidth every month from AT&T.

So i downloaded it, and i was wondering, what if the MEdia thing was already set to that? do i change both of them to what you told us to?

How does this differ from using Bluetooth PAN in the Internet Sharing application after modifying the registry to allow selection of Media Net as the Network Connection? Trying to decide whether to keep using things as I have been or try this.
April 16th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
How this works??
I have XP, should I make a dial-up connection using BJ as modem? Via Communication Manager?
April 17th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
I’ve followed all of the steps but how do i make the phone available as a wireless network. the current computer i’m using isn’t finding it. Is there another step.
April 18th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
First off, kudos on the site….it’s great! Regarding this update….I installed the cab file and made the changes to settings and this worked initially. However, it has now stopped working (just says “connection failed” when trying to log on). I tried re-booting the phone to no avail. I also uninstalled the cab file and tried to re-install but get an “install unsuccessful” error message every time. Any ideas?
April 19th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
here is what i did to get this all working download surealNetworks App Unlock then Anonymous Bj.WM6.ICS.Enable and then install and there you go no settings to change and I have used Bluetooth PAN on mac os x and it works just fine
April 19th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
ummm…ok its on my phone…now what?
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:16 am
Ok now i have my phone set up how do i make my computer find it and connect?
April 23rd, 2009 at 3:18 am
Anyone know if this will work over bluetooth, or does it have to be hardwired via USB?
April 26th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
samaniegodr – read the post on how to install a CAB file (under tips and tricks) and then follow the instructions on in the “use your blackjack II as a wireless modem” post – its as simple as that!
May 10th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
So suppose I want to play multiplayer games using this. Do you think that would cause att to notice?
May 11th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Maybe I should clarify that…
Suppose I play 15 to 20 hours of a fps multiplayer game during a month, do you think the att people will notice/go over 5 gigs?
May 12th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
I have installed the CAB on my phone but do not see it as a wireless location from my laptop? Am I missing a step?
May 13th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
hey, i was wondering what a CAB was and how do i install it, i read the instructions but im a bit lost.
Thanks
May 16th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
jj, playing a MMO or online game may be pushing it.. :T
May 16th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
ptorres, a CAB file is just a installation file for your blackjack ii. You download it like any other file. To install it, you copy/download the cab file to your blackjack ii (make sure you dont unzip it), open the file explorer application on your blackjack ii, browse to the location on you blackjack ii you copied/downloaded the cab file to, select it and click the enter button on your jog wheel.

there has to be more to this… can someone give a STEP BY EXCRUCIATINGLY DETAILED STEP guide..? what must you do on your computer to get this to work? what do you do on the blackjack 2? please? help?
June 2nd, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Ok… after reading many many blogs on this topic I’ve finally pieced it all together and I’m now successfully
tethering my internet connection from my blackjack 2 to my laptop. I can now choose to connect via a USB or
Bluetooth connection and I’ve been successful in switching between the two on the fly. Below are instructions for
installing the software and then establishing both a USB and Bluetooth connection… in that order. (Note: This guide requires you to download three programs from this site: http://www.jeffrenda.com/)
1) Download the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab file.
2) Download the secpolicies.cab file.
3) Download the BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab file (WARNING: If you download this file using IE, it may incorrectly name
the extension .isc be sure to rename it to .cab before saving it.)
4) Transfer all of these cab files to your BlackJack’s \My Documents folder.
5) Install the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab file and reboot.
6) Install the secpolicies.cab and reboot.
7) Install the BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab and reboot.
9) Connect the USB cable that came with your phone to your computer.
10) You should now be able to run ICS from the Internet Sharing Icon in your BlackJack’s Start Menu.
For USB connection
1) Select ‘USB’ from the “PC Connection” menu.
2) Select ‘MEdia Net’ from the “Network Connection” menu.
3) Press the ‘Menu’ soft key and select Connection Settings>GPRS>MEdia Net.
4) Set the “Connects to” menu to ‘The Internet’.
5) Type wap.cingular into the “Access point” field.
6) Select done and use the back button to return to the Internet Sharing main page.
7) Select “Connect”.
For Bluetooth Connection
1) Select ‘Bluetooth PAN’ from the “PC Connection” menu.
2) Select ‘AT&T ISP’ from the “Network Connection” menu.
3) Press the ‘Menu’ soft key and select Connection Settings>GPRS>AT&T ISP.
4) Set the “Connects to” menu to ‘The Internet’.
5) Type wap.cingular into the “Access point” field. (Initially this will be set to isp.cingular but don’t worry
about changing it. If you’re not using video sharing feature then you don’t need the isp.cingular protocol.)
5a) Leave everything else blank or on it’s original settings. You don’t need to fill out the user name or password fields, regardless of what it says above.)
6) Select done and use the back button to return to the Internet Sharing main page.
7) Select “Connect” (You should see a message that says “Device setup finished. On the PC, connect Bluetooth PAN”.)
9) Select ‘Connect to a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN)’
10) Click ‘Next’ (Your PC will now search for your device).
11) Once it finds tour device, select it and click ‘Connect’.
12) If you see “Connection Sucessful!” then you are now ready to browse the web.
***Important*** If you get the error “The remote party has ended this connection.” you need to shutdown your phone and then turn it back on. Then attempt to connect again. Everytime i restart my phone i get an instant connection.
Someone please try this and make sure it works. If it doesn’t please let me know because I must have left something out…Hope this helps!

I will explain how I got mine to work. **This is for bluetooth only and running mobile 6.1** I have not tried using a usb cable.
1. Browsed to this site on my phone and downloaded the cab file.
2. Installed said cab file on phone.
3. **This is important** Go to Settings > Connections > GPRS
If you have a lock symbol next to the different connections (att isp, media net, etc) you will need to run the UAMGR in the Windows directory of you phone to unlock these so you can edit them.
To Unlock: Open the File Explorer (found under Start \ All Programs \ Applications \ File Explorer) and browse to the Windows folder. Once in the Windows folder you are looking for an application called “UAMgr”. The quickest way to get to this file is to push the letter U on the keyboard and the phone will jump down to the files that start with U.
Run UAMgr by highlighting the file and pressing down on the action button. When the application opens you will see a screen that says “UAPMgr/Streaming” in the top title bar and “UA/Streaming Manager 2008″ in the center of the screen.
Press the Menu \ Tool \ Unlock ReadOnly. The phone will then present you with a confirmation screen indicating that Read Only has been unlocked. Press OK and then Close and you’re done.
4. Go back to Settings > Connections > GPRS
5. Click and edit ATT ISP – connects to = The Internet; Access Point= wap.cingular ; User name = WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM ; Password = CINGULAR1
6. Click and edit Media Net – connects to = WAP Network; Access Point= wap.cingular ; User name = WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM ; Password = CINGULAR1
7. Disable your laptops wireless radio. Turn on both laptop and phones blutooth connection and create a new connection and name it whatever you want. It should have created a icon that looks like a windows network icon in your bluetooth settings screen. You can right click this icon and send it to your desktop as a shortcut.
8. Run the Internet Sharing app on your phone. Under “PC Connection:” Change it to Bluetooth PAN (to change just hit right or left on scroll wheel). Hit the Connect button. Under status it should say: Device setup finished. On the PC, connect Bluetooth PAN. This is where you double click on the shortcut you created for the Bluetooth PAN connection. It will establish a connection, mine doesnt take but a second or two, and the status will now say connected. When finished, just hit Disconnect on your phone in the internet sharing app.
Hope this helps.

I installed the cab and use ICS on my BJ2 with WM 6.1 and changed the settings as listed above. I am not in a 3G area. I am in an EDGE area. It says I am connected at 10 mbs, but it seems very slow. Is this normal? I just ordered the $30.00 unlimited data plan for my phone because I just turned in my office blackberry and I wanted to access the net on on my laptop while I am in transit to my new location. Am I doing anything wrong?
June 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am
Has anyone tried this method for Fido or Rogers?
June 10th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
ive installed this and put in the correct info on media net and at&t isp, but then when i go back in the password has been changed(i know this because the password is a lot longer than cingular1). i change it back, but then when i look again its changed and im not able to connect to the internet. wut do i do!?!?!
June 13th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Here is the ATT guide to setting up the connection on windows xp. If you follow the post, and then follow the instructions from the link below, and you have ATT, it will work. I am posting this from my tethered pc.

works perfectly and is pretty fast on my laptop. thanks!
June 15th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Just to clarify for everyone as I finally got this working:
1) Install the CAB file on your phone.
2) Change settings per above instructions
3) Look in the Start Menu -> Programs for Internet Sharing and run it
4) Choose whether to connect to your PC via USB or Bluetooth
5) Hit the connect key and your computer will connect and have internet access
Note: This is not a wireless network your PC connects to, you will have to connect with USB or Bluetooth.
June 15th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Step 3 above means to run Internet Sharing on the Blackjack, not the PC.

July 1st, 2009 at 2:12 pm
will this work if im using T-Mobile with my Blackjack 2 instead of AT&T?
July 6th, 2009 at 1:07 am
Does this only work under WM6.1 ?
I’m on WM 6.0, installed the cab, rebooted the phone, and don’t see any “Internet Connection Sharing” application/program I can run.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:31 am
http://www.mdots.net/misc/BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab is no longer there.
I found an “Internet Sharing” icon on my BJII WM6.0 under /Windows.
Clicking on it gives an Alert -
“Can’t find ‘:MSINTERNET_SHARING’ (or one of its components)….”
July 6th, 2009 at 2:56 am
OK, this article describes how to get Internet Connection Sharing working under WM6.0, and it worked for me.
http://keithelder.net/blog/archive/2008/01/18/ATampT-Blackjack-II-Windows-Mobile-Phone-Review.aspx
You only need 2 cabs from there to get the whole thing going:
BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab
secpolicies.cab
Download speeds looks about the same as setting up the BJII up as a modem, described here:

Ok this worked perfect and was very easy to install. I used it great for about a month and then all the sudden today it kicked me off the net and switched to a limited connectivity setting. What is this and how do I change it back. I am running Vista and none of the repairs it says to try are helping. I will be very happy if someone could work that out. Work is going much slower without the internet.

Has anyone ever tried to use this in order to connect a PS3 to the internet
October 5th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I’ve been successfully using my Blackjack II as a modem on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 for sometime now.
Very simple. I connect my BJII via USB and the Mac sees it immediately and connects within a few seconds.
Love it! Thx Reamer.
October 8th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Okay so I got it almost working.
My computer recognizes it but wont let me go on the internet. It just says “identifying…” and wont identify it. Any help?
December 16th, 2009 at 8:15 am
The instructions worked fine for me with my BJ2 w/ 6.1 connecting to my Linux laptop.
However, I subsequently found that my MMS system now fails. I can’t send or receive MMS messages after changing the settings to wap.cingular.
With sending I get “Error, cannot send, check profile settings.” On receive I get “you have received a MMS… click on download to download this message.” upon clicking download, the same “unable to connect, check profile settings” pops up again.
So is ICS and MMS doable at the same time? How to configure?
Thx
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:20 am
I have followed the step by step instructions posted by savfw on June 2nd, 2009 at 10:58 pm and when I start up the Internet Sharing Application I get a message that says Checking USB Connection. That would seem to indicate that there is something wrong with my USB cable, but there is not, as I can change my USB connection settings to “Mass Storage” and see everything on my phone by navigating through My Computer on my laptop.
What am I missing?
Thanks.
Tom
