Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard Upgrade Available ... Sometime?
UPDATE: As July 2008 draws to a close, it looks like the anticipated July release date of the WM6.1 Update was incorrect. New estimates put the release end-of-Q3/Q4 2008. Sorry to get everyone’s hopes up.
The buzz on the internet is that sometime this month (July 2008) AT&T/Samsung will be releasing the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard upgrade for the Samsung Blackjack II.
When the upgrade becomes available I will make an announcement with intructions how to upgrade.
Update: I believe when the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade is available, it will be posted for download on the Samsung Blackjack II support page.
Some of the big features of Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard are:
- Threaded SMS
- Updated Dynamic Home screen
- Updates to PocketIE
- Copy/Paste
- …and much more!

In the mean time, start thinking about what you want to backup from your Blackjack II (contacts, messages, e-mail, photos, etc.) because when you upgrade it will wipe your phone clean. I suggest checking out Dashwire.

OHHH!!! That BlackJack 3 looks so sexy!!! And it has Wifi and what I’ve always wanted on my BlackJack 2 a touchscreen!
July 3rd, 2008 at 2:27 am
can anyone download this update regardless of their carrier? I am with Fido, would I get this update?
July 3rd, 2008 at 8:40 am
I just hope all of my programs are compatible with 6.1.
July 3rd, 2008 at 9:08 am
threaded SMS is where you can see the whole conversation right? and if so, then seconds on the f**k yeah!
July 3rd, 2008 at 9:09 am
If my blackjack is unlocked and i use it for t-mobile, would it lock back up when i upgrade to 6.1?
July 3rd, 2008 at 9:21 am
zombiebot, i know right? the Backjack 3 (if thats what it turns ou to be) looks wicked. it really will fix everything lacking about the blackjack II (larger screen, touchscreen, wifi, optional use of stylus via track-pointer) ..
hbcbob3, yup! threaded messages is where it groups the SMS’s by conversation (kind of like an IM history)
unfortunately i dont know how the 6.1 updates will be distributed yet. I dont knoow if itll be will a file download from AT&T or if it will be done via directly via the phone. ..

sweet, now the only other thing is, would all your hacks and mods found on this site still work for 6.1?
July 3rd, 2008 at 10:04 pm
well if alot of the hacks work on alot of of wm6.1 htc’s i should see no problem for them to actually work for the bj2 once again.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
all the hacks should still work as it wont really change the core directories, it may change some registry entries, and some of the hacks on this website might not be needed as they will fix these problems… Im just hoping that the Modaco GPS hack still works.

If it wipes the phone clean, does that wipe out the microSD too? or is that fine. like can i back up what i want on that? instead of dashwire?
July 6th, 2008 at 9:56 am
sforzando,
your microSD card will not be wiped out (im going to remove mine from my Blackjack II while updating just to be safe though
) .. You can backup to your microSD card however i dont know of a way to backup contacts to microSD. Dashwire does a pretty solid job of automatically backing up all the important pieces of data on your phone, but you can definitely use microSD or ActiveSync to backup files to your computer — its just more of a manual process.

Yes….. I have been waiting on this ever since I first heard about an update…… looks like we’re close….. David (I’m sure you will) give us the goods as soon as you hear anything about obtaining 6.1……

okay so this is basically a must do in order to upgrade. I hae all my ringtones, music, photos, videos all saved on my microSD card and on my BJ2, but how do i save my contacts. I use Outlook contacts becuase i like to have people who have more than one numbe under one name instead of labeling them as bob cell and bob work. But saving to the sim card is nice. Im also experiencing a problem trying to power down and power up, it might just be because my bettery is low but last night when i was downloading stuff from PhoneZoo.com i got the main battery is low message and when i went to turn it off it didtn want to. So i let it sit overnight thinking it might just die, but it didnt and finally this morning it turned off, is this normal? Sorry for the length of this post

July 24th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Helloo All,
Does anyone know if we are closer to a release date? I am dying to get the upgrade!!!! its almost end of july, so hopefully soon we hear anything
July 25th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
not sure about the release date.. as July is drawing to a close im getting more and more skeptical that the WM6.1 is going to make it to us on time.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:14 am
When is wm6.1 coming out, it is getting stupid. There’s all this talk, but nothing to back it up. i think if wm 6.1 was going to come out soon they would have given a date but everyone is so exited for this software that has no date of coming out. Can someone give me a reliable answer or date?
July 31st, 2008 at 7:30 am
I figure that when 6.1 comes out, it will only be about a month before the BJIII comes out, so it might not even be worth the trouble.
July 31st, 2008 at 8:57 am
cgroll,
true - the Blackjack 3 should be out late 2008 .. which is probably when the WM6.1 update for the Blackjack II will be released.. but there are a lot of people (like myself) who don’t qualify for upgrade pricing and aren’t going to want to shell out $200-300 for a Blackjack 3.. or even pay the $100-$200 to upgrade their Blackjack 2 to the Blackjack 3.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
